Portadown Heritage Tours secures National Lottery Support

Portadown Heritage Tours has received a £250,000.00 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for an exciting new project, Project Arch (Assessible Resilient Community Heritage).  The project is a community heritage based cultural tourism programme.  The aim is to make the heritage of Portadown more accessible and understood, the project promoter more resilient and ready to seize new opportunities and also engage the local communities in the preservation and promotion of the past.

National Lottery funding will help develop Portadown Heritage Tours ability to be a gateway to the Cultural Tourism in both industrial and Orange Heritage in County Armagh.  It is a two-year project which seeks support to build organisational resilience and promote Portadown and County Armagh’s heritage.

One of the central aims of the programme is to establish a community heritage forum and explore methods of encouraging communities to undertake their own heritage projects.  It will deliver a community engagement programme to promote access to heritage.  There will be various interpretation and educational materials developed through historical research.

The Programme will also see the launch of a Young Ambassadors Programme which will include World Host and Tour Guide Training.  The Programme will also benefit local schools in the area through education and outreach.  The Programme also offers new opportunities for volunteers and staff for more training and learning new skills.

The main aspects of the Project will take place in Carleton Street Orange Hall, one of the most historical buildings in Portadown and County Armagh, which celebrated its 145th anniversary this year.

Commenting on the award, B Partridge Chairperson of Portadown Heritage Tours, said “We are delighted that we have received this support.  Portadown, as the Orange Citadel, has a rich history and heritage and it is an excellent project which will develop new opportunities for the area. We are grateful to National Lottery players for making this possible”.

Paul Mullan, Director, Northern Ireland at The National Lottery Heritage Fund added:

“We are delighted to support this two-year project. The National Lottery Heritage Fund recognises how important community engagement is in understanding, exploring and promoting local heritage. We commend Portadown Heritage Tours for their inclusive approach which seeks to involve and educate a wider range of people about the history and heritage in Portadown and Armagh.”

The funding for Portadown Heritage Tours has been made possible by National Lottery players who raise £30 million every week for good causes in the UK. Since 1994, £41 billion has been raised for more than 565,000 good causes across the UK.
