The game of handball was once a popular sport in Portadown, with hundreds of people taking part, and with teams representing the town in matches against teams from other parts of Ireland.

It was in the early 1900’s that the game was at the height of its popularity, locally and this lasted until the outbreak of the Great War (1914-1918).  The handball alley was situated in Edward Street, it later became part of a handkerchief factory.

The game mostly disappeared from Portadown, although it remained popular in the Obins Street area of the town in the 1950’s.
